Description
The America's Cup, affectionately known as the "Auld Mug", is a trophy awarded to the winner of the America's Cup match races between two sailing yachts. One yacht, known as the defender, represents the yacht club that currently holds the America's Cup and the second yacht, known as the challenger, represents the yacht club that is challenging for the cup. The America's Cup is the oldest international sporting trophy.[1]
The 2013 America's Cup is being raced in AC72 wing-sail catamarans, and is being held in the Golden Gate and San Francisco Bay just north of San Francisco, California.
The Challenger of Record for the 34th America's Cup was Club Nautico di Roma, whose team Mascalzone Latino had competed in the challenger selection series for the 2007 America's Cup.[43][44] On 12 May 2011, they withdrew from the competition, citing challenges in agreeing with their sponsors on a budget sufficient to fund a competitive team.[45][46] The Challenger of Record is now the Kungliga Svenska Segelsällskapet.[47]
In September 2010 GGYC and BMW Oracle Racing announced that the next Cup match would take place in 2013 in a new class of boat, the AC72, a wing-sailed catamaran. Paralleling the "Acts" of the 32nd America's Cup—a series of preliminary events in different venues leading-up to the actual event—a new series, the America's Cup World Series was run using AC45 class boats (smaller, one-design versions of the individually designed AC72s to be used in the actual America's Cup events), in various world venues in 2011, 2012, and 2013, before the challenger selection series, defender selection series, and America's Cup Match in the Summer and Fall of 2013. Preliminary events began on 4 July 2013 on San Francisco bay, to culminate in a best-of-17 match race America's Cup final in mid-September 2013.[48][49] On 29 August 2012 Emirates Team New Zealand's AC72 New Zealand in a series of twenty-five photographs was seen to be sailing on hydrofoils as she entered Waitemata Harbour at Auckland. This event triggered a new technology race to be competitive in the 34th America's Cup.[50] The training breakdown of the challenger Artemis Racing's yacht on 9 May 2013, which killed crewmember Andrew James Simpson, was followed by class safety investigations led by the America's Cup committee and by the United States Coast Guard, triggering speculations over the outlook of the event from the media.
